Volvo Penta Joystick Driving wins IBEX Innovation Award

A game-changing innovation for the marine industry, the new Volvo Penta Joystick Driving was awarded a prestigious IBEX Innovation Award this year, in the “Propulsion Parts, Propellers” category, winning against a further 94 submissions. Launched in May, Volvo Penta’s groundbreaking technology integrates shift, steering and throttle into a single joystick control, allowing smoother maneuvers with the use of just one hand, for easier operations, more precise control, and a premium experience.

The award winners were announced on October 3, 2023 in Tampa, Florida, on the opening day of the International Boat Builders’ Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) – North America’s largest trade show event for marine industry professionals. Volvo Penta Joystick Driving won its award for showing clear leadership in its category, including an ability to advance the marine industry through better user experience, and enabling boaters to build a stronger connection with the environment around them.

“Joystick control has been around, but primarily used for docking, and Volvo Penta has taken to new heights with the innovative ability to drive the boat without touching the steering wheel. The system integrates shifting, steering, and throttle and easily installs into the driver’s armrest for ergonomic driving and comfort,” noted IBEX award judge, Steve Davis, from Boating Writers International.

Volvo Penta Joystick Driving can be used in all sizes and kinds of vessels, including commercial ships. The solution can be conveniently installed on the armrest of the driver’s seat, ensuring an ergonomic driving posture. The joystick is simply pushed forward to engage a gear, speed up or slow down, and released to remain at a certain speed. The acceleration is proportional to the angle of the joystick. When the joystick is pulled back, the throttle reduces, and the boat stops. To further enhance the driving experience, electronic gear shifting enables smooth acceleration and deceleration.

The IBEX Innovation Awards Program, now in its 20th year, is managed by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and judged by Boating Writers International (BWI). The awards program recognizes manufacturers and suppliers who bring new, innovative products to market in 15 different categories.

Hong Kong Marine Engines Maintenance Service, Ensuring Smooth Navigation

Engine is the power core of a boat during its daily operations. Due to prolonged usage, boat engines may experience various faults and issues. In Hong Kong, we offer professional engine inspection, repair, overhaul and maintenance services to ensure smooth navigation with optimal performance.

The most common issues that boaters may encounter with boat engines include:

1. Difficulty Starting the Engine: After ruling out that the battery is dead or there is no fuel, there may be an issue with the fuel system (fuel contains water, impurities, oil separator is clogged, supply pipe air lock), the control panel is unresponsive or there is an alarm. By troubleshooting the control and starting system of the entire engine, you can clearly understand the problem and solve it accordingly.

2. Loss of Engine Power: There may be a number of potential causes for an engine suddenly losing power during operation. Fuel-related issues such as contaminated fuel, a clogged oil separator, or a malfunctioning fuel pump can restrict fuel flow and cause reduced power. Mechanical problems, such as damaged or entangled blades, fouled bottoms, can also affect propulsion. If the cooling water or exhaust temperature is too high, the engine protection device may trigger an alarm and lock the system. Additionally, issues with the ignition system, electrical connections, or sensors can cause a loss of power.

3. Strange Noises: Unusual noises emanating from the engine can indicate underlying problems. Common noise-related issues include knocking or tapping sounds, which may indicate engine damage or worn-out components. If the belt triggers sound, maybe the battery is low in power. Squealing or grinding noises can suggest problems with belts, pulleys, or the drive system. Rattling or clunking noises might be caused by loose or damaged components. It’s important to investigate and diagnose the source of the noise to prevent further damage and ensure safe operation.

4. Engine Crash: A severe mechanical failure or malfunction can lead to an engine crash, where the engine abruptly stops working during operation. Causes can include catastrophic failures like a seized engine, broken internal components, or a major electrical or fuel system issue. Engine crashes require immediate attention and often necessitate professional repairs or replacements.

What services does Grandtech Hong Kong offer to address and troubleshoot these issues?

We also will determine if replacement is needed. Our goal is to provide our valued clients with reliable and efficient engine overhaul services that meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

What other common issues that boaters may encounter with boat engines?

Overheating: Another common issue that boaters may encounter with boat engines is overheating. Overheating occurs when the engine’s cooling system fails to regulate the temperature properly. Several factors can contribute to this problem:

1. Cooling System Blockages: Over time, the cooling system components such as heat exchangers, coolant passages, and water intake screens can become clogged with debris, sediment, or marine growth. These blockages restrict the flow of coolant or seawater, leading to inadequate heat dissipation and engine overheating.

2. Insufficient Coolant or Water: Low coolant levels or inadequate water supply to the cooling system can result in insufficient heat transfer and cause the engine to overheat. It is important to regularly check and maintain proper coolant levels as recommended by the manufacturer.

3. Hull water intake blockage: When the hull water intake is obstructed by debris or marine organisms, it is necessary to arrange hull cleaning.

What services does Grandtech Hong Kong offer to address and troubleshoot overheating?

  1. Repair and maintenance of the cooling system: The engine’s internal cooling system plays a critical role in regulating the engine’s temperature, and it operates as a closed system that must always be filled with a proper mixture of concentrated coolant and water.
  1. Inspection, Cleaning and Coolant or Water Refill: If blockages are suspected, the cooling system components, such as heat exchangers and cooling passages, may need to be inspected and cleaned to remove any debris or marine growth. We received lots of cases over the years of cooling system malfunction due to inappropriate use of coolant and this is strongly discouraged. The coolant mixture is essential as it provides crucial protection against internal corrosion, cavitation, and the risk of bursting due to freezing. It is vital to use a coolant with a suitable chemical composition to ensure comprehensive corrosion protection for the engine.

We always stress the significance of general maintenance for ensuring optimal engine performance and lifespan. Regular maintenance, conducted by our qualified and well-trained technicians, is crucial in keeping the engines in top condition. This includes timely diagnosis and software upgrades using VODIA, a specialized diagnostic tool. By prioritizing maintenance and staying up to date with software upgrades, boaters can maximize the performance and longevity of their Volvo Penta engines, ensuring a reliable and enjoyable boating experience.

Volvo Penta Coolant and its Performance Characteristics

Coolant plays a key role in maintaining engine temperature and preventing overheating to extend engine performance and life. Volvo Penta coolant, also known as Volvo Penta VCS (Volvo Coolant Specification), has the following performance characteristics to help ensure the efficient operation of marine engines.

1. Advanced anti-corrosion protection, effectively resisting metal corrosion, rust and clogging, ensuring smooth engine operation and extending service life.

2. Excellent thermal conductivity, which can quickly transfer the heat generated inside the engine to the cooling system, helping to maintain the engine operating within the appropriate operating temperature range, improve combustion efficiency, and reduce the risk of engine overheating.

3. High temperature stability, able to maintain its performance under extreme environmental conditions. Whether in hot environments or extremely cold polar regions, it can effectively protect the engine from temperature changes.

Volvo Penta Coolant – Green vs Yellow (VCS)

Volvo Penta currently has two different coolants, green coolant and yellow coolant. Green coolant was used in early products, and all later products shipped from the factory were yellow coolant. Green coolant is produced using different technologies and contains inhibitors that cannot chemically mix with yellow coolant. It is difficult to completely remove the residue of green coolant, so those who originally used green coolant should still use the original coolant, and green coolant must not be mixed with yellow coolant.

Yellow coolant is a yellow liquid. Yellow coolant contains new inhibitory materials adapted to modern engines. It can better prevent corrosion and sediment accumulation, and hinder the occurrence of cavitation and electrical corrosion.

VCS yellow coolant cannot be mixed with green coolant or other brands of engine coolant under any circumstances to avoid possible chemical reactions, clogging of water channels, and high temperatures.

How to Use Coolant?

The replacement cycle is 4 years or 8000 hours. Generally, yellow coolant needs to be replaced every four years, and green coolant needs to be replaced every two years.

Volvo Penta currently provides two types of coolant: mixed liquid or concentrated liquid. The original mixed liquid is composed of 40% concentrated liquid and 60% distilled water; if you need to choose concentrated liquid, the water quality must meet the specifications of ASTM D4985 (American Society for Testing and Materials, abbreviated as ASTM, is a specification developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials, which is specifically used for the evaluation and testing of coolants.), the concentrate must be mixed with purified water according to the mixing ratio, only such coolants are suitable and approved by Volvo Penta.

In order for the cooling system to have a satisfactory anti-rust function, even without any risk of freezing, it is necessary to use coolant with the correct composition all year round. If an unsuitable coolant is used or the coolant is not mixed as required, it will affect the engine in the future. Warranty claims for components of the cooling system may be denied.

Currently, the concentrate has the following three different mixing ratios, which correspond to different freezing points:

40% concentrate and 60% distilled water -24 °C
50% concentrate and 50% distilled water -37 °C
60% concentrate and 40% distilled water -46°C

According to the usage requirements in the user manual, the normal coolant level must be between the upper and lower scale marks of the expansion tank or not lower than the lowest scale. After the coolant is used for a period of time, a small amount of water will evaporate and need to be replenished. If the water quality replenished by the user is inappropriate, it will also cause failure of the related cooling system.

As shown in the picture below, the iron bars in the water tank are oxidized, and the rust peels off and floods every corner of the cooling system. The reason is that the user added a large amount of substandard water. Judging from the rust pictures, rust has been scattered in the cooling system. There is also rust on the engine thermostat mounting base. The engine block and cylinder head are also victims. It is certain that the yellow VCS antifreeze has deteriorated and lost its anti-rust function. One of the basic functions of qualified antifreeze is to prevent rust. It is the user’s responsibility to use qualified and regular coolant.

How to Purchase Volvo Penta Coolant? We currently offer Coolant VCS (yellow) as a stock solution in a 5-liter concentrated form, which can be conveniently purchased directly through our online store. It is important to note that before use, the coolant must be diluted with distilled water. Please avoid using tap water or mineral water for dilution purposes.

Hybrid-Electric Experience : Volvo Penta Partners with Groupe Beneteau to Lead the Future of Boating

As the Hong Kong distributor of Volvo Penta, Grandtech Hong Kong expresses joy at the brand’s efforts in shaping the future development of the marine industry.

Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau joined forces to host a collaborative, hands-on testing event for an innovative hybrid-electric experience in June. Developed with a third-party market research analyst, a formal questionnaire was used to capture actionable data the two companies will use as guidance towards the future boating experience. The goal was to seek feedback and input from a variety of consumer boating industry experts on how the hybrid-electric experience could shape the future of boating.

The event took place at the Volvo Penta Krossholmen Test Facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, and included boating media, dealers and customers. Guests were invited to participate in a conceptual boating experience that featured the strengths of both Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau — Volvo Penta’s hybrid-electric system integrated into a leisure boat that showcases the latest advances in sustainability, intuitive operation and near-silent cruising.

Along with the opportunity to engage with expert demos and hands-on test driving, guests were also interviewed exclusively one-on-one to capture for their reflections on the value of the hybrid-electric experience and how it could transform boating behavior.

A stunning 72% of attendees indicated a high likelihood of choosing a hybrid-electric system for their next boat purchase after testing the vessel. This remarkable insight helps prove the trend toward market readiness for hybrid-electric boating solutions and may well forecast them as the next evolutionary step in sustainable boating.

A GROUNDBREAKING CONCEPT

The hybrid-electric boat featured by Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau presents no compromise, embodying the best of both worlds — the range and top speed of a conventional combustion engine vessel and the minimized carbon emissions of an electric driveline. It has a top speed of 35 knots and the ability to cruise up to 10 knots on electric power alone. The plug-in parallel hybrid features two Volvo Penta D4-320 engines alongside two 60 kW electric motors. The electric motors and combustion engines work together to deliver responsiveness and smooth acceleration boost.

Headline features include onboard battery banks that can store 67 kWh and a unique Human Machine Interface (HMI) that seamlessly switches among Electric, Hybrid and Power modes. This robust battery storage can expand the horizons of exploration, offering the opportunity to live off-grid, without running a generator or combustion engine, and explore otherwise-restricted areas, such as protected waters or near wildlife habitats. A fully integrated experience includes Volvo Penta Joystick Docking and Dynamic Positioning System in electric mode, for a fine-tuned level of precision and control.

INSIGHTS FOR THE FUTURE

More than 50 guests attended the event. 77% rated themselves as “expert” and “advanced” boaters. Polling revealed that their main interests in hybrid-electric boating could be categorized under the themes of environment and experience.

Environmental: 47% were interested in carbon emissions reductions and 19% were interested in general environmental benefits.

Experiential: 41% were interested in new technology; 33% were interested in more silent operation; and 12% were interested in added features, reduced vibration and noise.

Those interests held strong through the entire event, and most often, they were rewarded. The hybrid-electric boat received an overwhelmingly positive reaction. After a test drive, guests were asked to rate aspects of their experience.

Volvo Penta’s Joystick Docking in electric mode was a top feature, earning an “excellent” or “very good” rating from an impressive 98% of testers.

Also receiving “excellent” and “very good” ratings:

– Using large batteries to live aboard the boat without having to run a generator: 95%
– Near-silent electric cruising: 88%
– Zero emissions in slow speeds and responsible boating in sensitive areas: 85%
– Acceleration using electric boost: 82%
– Ability to charge using the main combustion engines: 79%

When asked how a hybrid-electric boating solution from Volvo Penta could change attendees future boating habits, the results revealed that they were particularly impressed by its ability to change boaters’ relationship to the water and their surroundings:

– More low speed cruising: 41%
– Stay more nights off the grid: 34%

Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau will continue to explore and capture insights and will use these as the boating experience of the future transforms. This will include, among others:

– Safety on the water
– Charging infrastructure
– Changing pricing models
– HMI interface, guided experiences, boater education, gamification
– Comfort and experience

Overall, the partnership between Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau, combined with the overwhelmingly positive response from industry experts, sets a promising trajectory for the future of boating. As the demand for sustainable alternatives continues to grow, hybrid-electric systems have emerged as a compelling solution.
